Educational Psychologist (EP) Assessment
These assessments are the most comprehensive and therefore cost more.
They are often required as standard of proof by Local Education
Authorities, Examination Boards, Tribunals, Colleges and Universities.
What
is involved?
-
First we send you a questionnaire, which gives
important background information to the EP.
-
An essential chat with the EP
-
2-2 ½ hours of activities and some small
chunks of reading and writing.
-
A brief discussion about the results
-
A full written confidential report with
recommendations is sent after approximately 3 weeks.
The results give a profile of learning strengths and
weaknesses. A diagnosis of dyslexia is often based upon the
EP’s experience and low scores in those areas generally
affected by dyslexia.
For exam dispensation purposes this report will need to be updated
after 2 years to determine if there is still a need for assistance.
However the re-assessment will only be short and is at a much-reduced
cost.
All assessors are independent, fully qualified and
highly experienced professionals. All information is
confidential and will not be shared without your prior permission.
Specialist Teacher
Assessment
These assessments are very comprehensive but are not as widely accepted
as proof of dyslexia as the psychologist assessment.
What
is involved?
-
First we send you a questionnaire, which gives
important background information to the teacher.
-
A brief initial chat with the teacher.
-
2-2 ½ hours of activities & some
small chunks of reading and writing.
-
A brief discussion about the results at the end
-
A full written confidential report with
recommendations is sent after approximately 3 weeks.
The assessment results and practical
recommendations are prepared as a confidential report and will not be
shared without your prior permission.
Specialist
Teacher Brief Assessment
The assessment involves
-
A series of activities that take at least
1 hour to complete.
-
At the end of the assessment the teacher will
discuss the results with you and make recommendations. This
is not a definitive assessment of dyslexia but will identify areas of
need.
All assessors are fully qualified and highly
experienced professionals. All information is confidential
and will not be shared without your prior permission.
Examination
Certificates
Dyslexics with a past history of specialist help or previous assessment
report that identifies dyslexic difficulties, can apply for special
arrangements in most public examinations.
Dispensations usually take the form of
-
extra time (as dyslexics process information more
slowly this puts them on an equal footing with non-dyslexics)
but can also be
-
use of a computer, amanuensis/scribe or reader.
A special assessment and form usually needs to be
completed to apply for these special arrangements. The BDC
assessment Centre can give the necessary assessment, which takes
approximately 1 hour.
Check with the exam governing body to establish
-
the extent of special arrangements available and
-
the standard of proof they require for you to
qualify
-
whether ‘examined under special
arrangements’ will be shown on your qualification certificate
Occupational
Therapy (OT)
An independent visiting occupational therapist will give an initial
assessment. This will be written up into a programme of
intervention. Follow up treatments can then be arranged.
Occupational therapy addresses difficulties with balance and
co-ordination. Difficulties can range from large (gross)
movements like riding a bicycle to small (fine) movements like
illegible handwriting. It is often helpful for addressing
dyspraxia.
Speech and Language
Therapy (SALT)
An independent visiting speech and language therapist will give an
initial assessment. This will be written up into a programme
of intervention. Follow up treatments can then be
arranged.
Treatments can also be given in BDC teaching sessions, following the
programme devised by the speech therapist.
